Looking good Thursday 5-30. There is a kinda-sorta Event among the World-Famous Rat Pack on Saturday. They appreciate the 3-day care that makes our TT track so spectacular. And all of 'em are doing the water truck dance, even now. That moisture has to reach deep, and then get sealed off, in order to make all those crazy Old Guys happy. It is a top-notch thing, and the best bargain for any fan of dirt track. Sometimes Government works really well.

Our Kinda-Sorta Event was a rousing success. The Rat Pack wishes to thank our maintenance department for a job well done. We have a TT track worthy of experienced and maybe even notorious riders.

We have important visitors on a regular basis out there on the TT track. One of 'em is Craig Rogers, who rides an inconspicuous Honda 230. No, it isn't stock. And it goes pretty good. Craig turns out to be the owner/manager of the number one flat track team this year, featuring Jared Mees on an XR750. Craig is something of a regular these days, and he's known just as much for his speed out there as for his endurance. None of the World Famous Rat Pack mess with him 'till he's done at least 20-laps.
Point is, that our TT track is excellent - most of the time, and that it is attracting very high-level riders on a consistent basis. Our good buddy Gene understands even more than we do how to optimize this feature of the park.
A suggestion has been tendered regarding the jump. Some would like it with more lip./ The wheel packing has flattened it out a touch over the last few months.
TT is a thing somewhere in between flat track and rough scrambles. What we have going now is very close to anything short of an entry-fee race track

At my direction, Chris watered the track this morning, and returned a half-hour later to wheel pack it. It went badly. Water had penetrated to a depth of about 3/4 inch, and the wheels stuck to it, lifting clods above dry dust. We had been better off leaving it alone.
Tricky stuff. Seems like moisture needs days, not hours, to reach deeply. And it needs hours, not minutes, to form a roll-able crust. This time of year, the TT track grooming might best be done mid-week, and this includes the bulk of moisture. On the weekend, water might be needed only for dust control. And quite possibly, this was already intended.
Attendance is rather light anyway, so it's a great time to experiment, and to find out what doesn't work. And shucks, in any race, everybody is riding the same track.

Talked with Chris this morning. He will adjust his water schedule to start wednesdays took get the track ready for weekend use.

Thank you. FYI, I saw two applications of water at +4PM Thursday. Spoke with Chris. Did a soil sample (!) (What? He's doing soil samples?) Yes. And the two applications of water penetrated to a depth of about 3/8 inch. Ideally, we'd have moisture to 4 inches. Practically, 2 would be nice. The dirt itself is slow to absorb, 'specially this time of year. One trick is to rip the surface before watering. And in any case, prep needs days rather than hours. Man hours are actually low. It's just three days attention, and the return is a track that survives through Tuesday. Elite riders notice the difference. Beginners might not. And when the rains return all bets are off!

Agreed. The compaction on the track is what slows the infiltration rate of the soil so much. Ripping it would be the ideal route to take. Did you mention that to Chris? If not, we can talk to him about it.
