Along Woodcamp Road and the first part of High Road to the San Juan Canyon Gate we installed white carsonite posts with red reflector tape on it. These are in place to mark the fire escape route for San Juan Canyon residents. Please keep an eye on these as it is very important they remain visible and in good conditions. Thanks.

They are spread through out Wood Camp, mostly around other trail intersections (Knob, Petes, Gully, near Twin, near entrance to Ridge, and on High Road until the San Juan Canyon Gate). Attachments:

So how does that work? Fire breaks out. Close the park, kick everyone out. Open up Harmony Gate (San Juan gate)?

I imagine it would be difficult to kick every one out of the park, however if a fire does break out I'm sure there will be some sort of notification strategy implemented by the Rangers to alert guests.
As far as the route goes property owners on San Juan Canyon have the combo to the gate and can open it in the event of a fire. At this point the Rangers will already have information about the fire and ideally they can guide the convoy of vehicles down Woodcamp.

This form of signage is likely to confuse riders in that they are identical to the "wrong way" indicators at other mc parks. I would hate to think of the legal fall-out if someone were to turn around and head back the wrong way into oncoming traffic. Maybe it's unlikely, and far fetched, but the worst case scenario puts the State Parks at complete fault. The escape route is a great idea, but "red" means wrong way, not fire escape. You could put green arrows from High rd on down Wood Camp with a sign at the top entry gate stating follow the green arrows.

I think that they should be labeled, something like escape route. If they are labeled, the color would be ok.

These markers are not too similar to "wrong way" signs, but this is not an unreasonable concern. If the words "fire evacuation route" or something like that were stenciled on the posts, I believe your concern would be addressed. I assume the red tab is reflective for night time evacuation.

Thanks for bringing this concern to our attention. I like the stencil idea. I'm thinking we mark the white posts with "FIRE ESCAPE ROUTE" and and arrow to reduce misinterpretation of the signage. THoughts?

In the interest of limiting the amount of labeling needed on each sign, the word "fire" could be omitted. If you are on the trail escaping from fire, you need not be reminded. "Escape route" should suffice.

I was a bit confused with the fire escape route signs. As a red sign post leans toward the the meaning of going the wrong way. I saw only one sign post that had words about a fire escape route. I would feel much better if all the escape sign posts had the words fire escape route.

Saw one of the fire posts on the ground Sunday. I think it's the one near the picnic table, high road and wood camp
