I was looking for a GPS app for my phone so that i could "lay down bread crumbs" in the upper ranch to help me with the hareball course layout last week. I didn't have the app then, and had to use my GPS and transfer(the track file) to another program so Google earth could make sence of it and overlay it. Anyway, i found a great app that has the parks trails WITH NAMES!!! There are probably several like this, but this one had that right out of the box with nothing to "turn on" first. It's called: Open GPS tracker. Its free. Try it out and report what you think!

Note: still need to go into the park and check to see if it will work with no cell service(satellites only).

Update: Well, That didn't work very good! Once the phone lost it's signal, it wouldn't update when i zoomed in. Found a new option and will check it out. It's simple-er this time.
Today while i was playing around with Google maps (came pre loaded with my phone) I moved the map to the park itself, then selected the menu, then selected "make available offline". Once you select this you get a square to to put the map that you want offline into, then select done. After i did this, i put my phone in airplane mode and tried it. Seemed to work, but will need to try it in the park to be sure.
Note: you need to be in good cell/wifi range when you are making the map for use offline.

It works. Even with a phone that doesn't have cell service assigned (old phone). That means if you have an old smart phone you can use it without the worry of possibly wrecking your current phone while you are riding.
It does show your current location in the park with trail labels.
But judging by the response, not sure if it will be of use to anyone.

I have found another good app for this. It's called My Tracks. Admittedly, i haven't tried it for location, mostly for tracks. I like it because it records stats like: distance, speed, elevation gains/ losses, also runs total or aggregated stats of all your tracks. It also does not need cell service, it runs on your devices GPS.
