Without intending to be poetic or anything, I wish to recommend a surprisingly calm and enjoyable destination within the park. Everybody knows the Windmill. And they know the Challenge Loop sign, the Maze and the Loop and the OK Coral trails. They've seen the Windmill sign that remembers the Harris Family picnics up there, and they normally slow down a little bit 'cause it's kind of an intersection. I myself usually try to pass through there on the back tire only, but never when anybody could see.
This time (not the first time) I stopped and turned off the bike.
There was shade, and (what do they call it?) Dappled Sunlight. Right. Dappled. Swear to God. There was also peace, and stillness, and an amazing calm, even in the midst of what normally doubles as a racetrack. Sure, it was a week day, and the crowds had all gone away, but the space enclosed by those oak trees, and the silly old windmill endlessly spinning out strokes to a pump long disconnected, all add up to the kind of experience you might expect from some kind of hysterical (historical) nature preserve.
Well. We got that. Check it out. And don't try to move that first picnic table --- it's chained to the ground. I bet there's a story behind THAT.

That whole bathroom area has to be ADA accessible. Yes we know that you have to ride a dirt bike to get there, but the law is pretty firm on it. So we had to setup some picnic tables that were stationary within an acceptable firm and level surface so a wheelchair could use it.
